Men, so the received wisdom goes, are not well-suited to multi-tasking. And as a man who sometimes experiences difficulty even in single-tasking, following a hashtag on TwitterFall during a live TV or radio broadcast can prove nightmarish, to say the least.
Tonight, Radio 4′s Moral Maze was discussing Twitter, and in particular, its place in political debate. Listeners were being asked to contribute, in real time, via the hashtag #moralmaze. Read the rest of this entry »

I was initially pleased when it came to my attention that a company called Premiere had started operating their X1 service, which serves roughly the same route as the incumbent TrentBarton’s Radcliffe Line. While TrentBarton operates a very good service, I felt that a little bit of competition on the route would ensure that prices remained competitive. Read the rest of this entry »

As always when my mobile phone contract comes up for renewal, I was torn recently between downgrading my tariff and upgrading my phone. As a gadget-lover, it’s nigh on impossible to talk oneself into taking the sensible option. Particularly when the technology has evolved so much in the last year-and-a-half. It was during my university days that I started following my football team, Notts County. At around the same time, I picked the Daily Telegraph as my news organ of choice. And, much like my footballing allegiance, I have a strong sense of loyalty towards the paper.
Actually, that should read had a strong sense of loyalty. You see, I’ve just cancelled my subscription to the Telegraph. Read the rest of this entry »

In the past, when I’ve had occasion to travel between Grantham and Radcliffe-on-Trent, the journey has been straightforward. Board a train at Grantham; get off at Radcliffe station about half an hour later. Sadly, this journey is no longer quite as simple as it should be, thanks to a series of ‘improvements’ made by the train operator, East Midlands Trains. Read the rest of this entry »

[This is an article I wrote back in 2003, which was published in Notts County fanzine The Pie.]
There are certain facts which have been drummed into the average football supporter’s head this season to such an extent that they now go without saying. If you’d spent the last few months living in a nuclear bunker and turned down the option of cable TV, you could be forgiven for missing the takeover of Chelsea by some Russian who’s not short of a few bob. News of Beckham’s transfer would no doubt have found its way through your six-foot concrete shell, however; some things truly are inescapable. Read the rest of this entry »
